Market leading footfall data for UK-quoted supermarkets will help financial analysts better measure store performance and size of market share.

Location Sciences ‘Footfall to Share Price’ product is available as part of an Alternative Data catalog on Bloomberg Enterprise Access Point (BEAP). This alt-data is designed to give financial analysts a detailed, consistent and real-time view of store visits, plus complimentary performance metrics including time spent in store and distance travelled to store. It provides an early-stage barometer for supermarket performance and when combined with existing datasets already available through BEAP, creates powerful insights into store revenue and size of market share.

The dataset examines sixteen leading supermarkets including the four listed on the London Stock Exchange; namely Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Morrison’s and consists of approximately 15 million monthly store visits, from 4 million unique devices to more than 13,000 unique stores throughout the UK. The supermarkets considered are:

Location movement analysis is essential in educating marketers to make the best possible decisions – whether about when to re-open stores or where to invest. Our partnership offers financial analysts extrapolated historical data to predict share price movements. We’re delighted to contribute a robust alternative dataset to help Bloomberg clients easily integrate high-value data in context within their analytics and workflows.

What is the product?

Why is it Useful?

What is Location Sciences unique value?

Location Sciences has derived a footfall dataset for UK supermarkets, acting as an early-stage barometer for supermarket performance.

This dataset can be used to easily track supermarket performance as well as the performance of individual stores over time. The dataset is for the whole of the UK thus also allowing analysis of store performance by region and/or town. Location Sciences has also included complimentary metrics on time spent in store and average distanced travelled to store, which provide further indications of store performance.

The dataset is easily combined with other datasets via the stores LEI thus allowing analysts to enrich their current datasets and improve their ability to predict store performance.

Location Sciences has the largest and highest quality precision location data lake available in the UK. We have then used our market leading expertise to produce a privacy compliant insights product for UK supermarkets.

What Data is Collected and How is the Data Used?

How far back does the data go and what kind of metrics will clients have access to in each file?

The data collected includes daily visitation data, shopping patterns derived from distance traveled and dwell metrics, as well as store level index, providing a benchmark of total store performance.
This data can be used to easily track performance of individual stores over time, detect signs of economic re-emergence, or enrich with online retailer sales metrics to predict company performance.

Daily store visits: Data for daily store visitation is updated weekly with history available back to 1 January 2018. Data includes actual and normalised visit counts, median and average dwell times, median and average distance travelled from home, and store related reference data.

How Have you Calculated your Store Index?

What is the Total DAU Count?

Our data scientists have used average store visits for the whole of 2019 as the benchmark on a supermarket by supermarket basis. We have then normalized the actual store visits utilising the number of unique devices versus the average for 2019 and produced a simple index which shows increases / decreases in store visits versus our benchmark

DAU stands for Daily Active Users, this metric shows the number of unique devices from which the store visit counts are calculated on a daily basis. This count is provided as the size of the total number of unique users seen on a specific date varies over time, consequently, to draw meaningful conclusions this information is required to normalise the store visit counts.

The Supermarket Dataset

The supermarket footfall dataset shows store visits, normalised store visits alongside the average and median and time spent in store and the distance travelled to store from home.

The dataset covers the sixteen leading supermarket chains listed above.

Location Sciences applies visit attribution techniques, such as removing workers and passer-by traffic to ensure the quality and reliability of the data reported.

In addition, the Retailer Index supplied takes into account bias and natural changes to our input dataset.

The dataset itself consists of approximately 15 million monthly store visits, from 4 million unique devices to over 13,000 stores throughout the UK.

The dataset includes over 3 years of historic store visits (starting on 1 January 2018) and will initially be updated weekly.

The dataset allows analysts to investigate by supermarket, by store type, by region and for any time period.
